'THE BLACK KLANSMAN': SPIKE LEE & JORDAN PEELE TEAM UP TO BRING THRILLER BASED ON TRUE STORY OF A BLACK COP WHO INFILTRATED THE KKK
What a time to be alive, legendary director and producer Spike Lee is reported to be teaming up with the equally talented newcomer Jordan Peele to produce a thriller titled , Black Klansmen.
The movie will tell the real life story of Ron Stallworth, a black undercover cop who in the late 70's managed to infiltrate the KKK.
I don't know about you all, but I've sadly never heard of him, so to Google I went. It would seem that , in 1978 Stallworth saw an ad in the newspaper that listed that the KKK was seeking new members and he applied. Not only did he gain membership, but he ended becoming the head of his local chapter. During his time as a Klansmen he was able to obtain a great deal of intel which gave him the chance to sabotage their famous cross-burnings and other activities of the infamous hate group. Of course the obvious, he's black, could have been a major deterrent , but he managed to receive most of the important information by disguising himself as a white supremacist during phone conversations and other alternate forms of communication— sending a white officer in his place when there was in-person meetings.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news early today that John David Washington, Denzel Washington's (deliciously handsome) son & star of HBO's 'Ballers' is in talks to star in the film which is slated to begin production this fall.
Lee is pegged to direct and produce with Peele producing alongside of him. Also reportedly producing is QC Entertainment's Shaun Redick and Sean McKittrick as well as the Blumhouse Production's Jason Blum. This film will see the first , and hopefully not the last , of the Peele and Spike duo. Word on the street is this movie has been in the works for 2 years now and is just finally getting the clearance. I for one think the story is as relevant now as it was when it happened in the late 70s and I applaud Lee and Peele for having the gut to bring it to the big screen.
Want more information on Mr. Stallworth, well you're in luck, he has a book out by the same name which he published in 2014 talking about his experience in the KKK. If you plan to see the coming movie, I would definitely add it to your reading list because I would imagine the film will rely heavily on it.
